Take a tour inside our hotel
Hilton House is one of the oldest family dwellings in the South Derbyshire village of Hilton.
Built sometime in the mid 1800’s in red brick Hilton House appears on the census map for the first time in 1881.
Fast forward 130 years and with the addition of a function room and reception, the old building is still obvious against the later additions.
Despite its beautiful ivy clad frontage on Mill Lane, the entrance to the hotel is from the car park.
Reception is where you will find Colin and Zoe during the day, owners since Dec 2008. Zoe is our Wedding Co-ordinator and function room manager. Colin keeps a tidy cellar which stocks 9 varying ales, lagers and ciders.
From reception are the stairs to 6 of our bedrooms. Bear in mind this was a family dwelling, so whilst 5 of the rooms are en-suite they are not the largest inside. They are comfortable with everything you need, sink, in most cases in the actual room and then a shower room with toilet. TV, clock radio, kettle, desk and stool, full length mirror with hanging space and bedside lamps. Because its what you would use at home we provide bath sheets, not the silly little bath towels some use to save a few pence.
One of ours rooms has a private bathroom as it was not easy to make it an en-suite inside the bedroom, though it is a twin with two single beds but works well if you are sharing with a colleague.
The remaining rooms in the main building are a mixture of twins with double and single bed, doubles and our best room has a King-sized bed and a full bathroom with view of our 150 year old Cedar Tree.
Back down to ground floor, we have our public bar which has 6 tables, and stools at the bar. We have a TV showing BT Sport, Juke box and open fire place which has a real fire lit during wintry months to keep you warm inside. With 30 bodies we are pretty full, but still squeeze more in at Christmas and the odd karaoke night.
Back past reception we have a small lounge area, though the tables and chairs can be dined at or are popular for short meetings.
Two steps down and we have 3 intimate dining tables and our function bar. The bar is probably the smallest in the world, remember we were not built as a hotel, but with good staff we can take your orders come back to the public bar and have your drinks poured inside no time.
Follow the corridor past one set of toilets and you enter our function room. This was added in the 70’s but because of the sloping land it is on two levels. There is a half height wall and sliding top half that is used to split into two for small intimate gatherings or can be opened up to seat over 100 and has a dance floor in the middle with DJ pit built onto the side. There are 2 steps between the two levels.
French doors lead you outside to a grassed area with tables, during the summer months we have a bouncy castle for younger guests and there is a footpath to what was 2 cottages now also converted to 4 more bedrooms.
The ceiling height is very low so all rooms have a bathroom with bath en-suite. The two ground floor rooms have mixer tap shower attachments, but they are not proper showers.
These rooms are a mixture of King-sized, double and twin/family.
Three of our rooms with double and single bed can also have a fold out bed set up in them to sleep a family of 4.
You are not going to have much space but if you just need a place to sleep after a function they serve a purpose.
Hilton House is privately owned, has no affiliation with the Hilton International chain, is in the village of Hilton and is a practical hotel for people working at Nestle in Hatton, Dairy Crest in Foston, Agrii;Toyota; Molson Coors; Rolls Royce; Don Amots Leisure Kingdom; families visiting friends in Hilton or attending functions nearby or in the hotel itself.
The hotel has a long tradition of being a venue for Weddings and has a licence so you can tie the knot here; Birthday celebrations; Christenings; Funerals; Society gatherings – weekly, monthly, annually or even every 5 years for some groups.
Of course a venue such as Hilton House also hosts Christmas Party Nights, Christmas Day Lunch and New Years Eve celebration plus the annual family get togethers for Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Easter Sunday and a weekly Sunday Carvery.
You will find far more modern hotels in Derby and Burton, both about 6 miles from Hilton, but they will not be run by the owners, will not have staff that have been here for a number of years who get to know your favourite drink, how you like your food, when its your birthday, become your friends and eventually go on holiday together. We are a big family, we work for each other, help each other and share each others good and bad times.
As an occassional patron you may not appreciate this, but the more you frequent us the more you will see what a great place Hilton House is.
We will of course get it wrong from time to time, we are human, but our intentions are honourable, so if we have failed let us know, we will do our best to correct the problem.
We are not quite the hotel California, you can leave, but you’ll look forward to when you can come back
